How Does Vibrational Sound Therapy Work?
If you are running a flat out sprint, your body must work harder than when you are sitting quietly in a chair. While sprinting, your muscles are firing, your heartrate is elevated, and your lungs gulp air as fast as they can. While sitting, your muscles are relaxed, your heart beats slower, and your lungs breathe so calmly you don't even notice them.
Like our bodies, our brains shift into different modes depending on what we are doing. If you're driving a car in traffic, your brain must work very quickly and actively. But when you're in deep sleep, your brain only works very slowly. When scientists measure brain activity with electroencephalography (EEG), these different states show up as different kinds of "brain waves".
In our daily waking hours, our brain is constantly paying attention to new activities. This can include anything from talking with another person to cooking a meal to doing your taxes. These kinds of activities produce beta waves, which cycle very quickly, between 13-30 times per second, or hertz (Hz). It is in this "beta state" that we experience stress.
Now say you've finished the task at hand. If you sit down to rest, or take a walk, or otherwise relax, your brain waves will slow down to only 8-12Hz. This is the "alpha state" and produces alpha waves.
If you relax even deeper, your brain waves slow even further, into a "theta state". This occurs during the most restful times of day, such as meditation, day-dreaming, and those soft moments as you drift off to sleep. On an EEG, theta waves appear as long, sensuous rolling hills, with a frequency of just 4-7Hz.
These times are when we are most deeply relaxed, most at peace. They are also when your mind and body restore themselves, when your natural self-healing abilities are at their most effective, when the stress we've accumulated can dissipate away.
